The late Al Ramsawack was an award winner of Trinidad and Tobago’s prestigious National Humming Bird Silver Award (2004) for his contribution to T&T’s culture and folklore.
This book, Folklore Stories of Trinidad and Tobago is a compilation of his published stories from 1971 to 2016. These stories are largely influenced by Amerindian, French, East Indian, and African cultures within this twin island state in the Caribbean.
The author’s fascination with folklore began in the 1930’s while growing up in the village of Sangre Grande, Trinidad. During this time, folklore stories and its characters were believed to be real rather than mythical, and what a perfect setting to imagine encounters with folkloric characters than a home on the edge of a forest, and on the border of a large Cocoa plantation.
Find out how superstition seemingly controlled the psyche of rural villagers as they run into forest-dwelling folklore characters like the Soucouyant, Papa Bois, Mama d’Leau, and La Diablesse.
