FAQ's

The wybl is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit corporation formed to operate a youth basketball league in the se wisconsin metro area.We serve community-based teams ranging from 3rd grade through 8th grade. The league provides a vehicle for youths wishing to play competitve basketball in their pre-high school years.

No. We do not accept individual players and only accept full teams that are associated with their school feeder program.

Team registration opens in mid-August and runs close to the end of September, though it is the goal of the WYBl to have the vast majority of teams locked down by mid-September so we can focus on finalizing the last part of the field before the end of September.

We typically have five competitive levels in this order: "A", "Z", "Y", "B", "C". Select the one you think bests represents your team and its ability. For returning teams, Lee will also slot you into where he thinks the historical results match WYBL needs.

WYBL priority: Schools that have been a long standing member of the WYBL. Returning programs whom enter a full array of teams at every grade level. Returning programs that are still trying to fill out a complete set of teams at each grade level. New programs that are attempting to fill a complete set of teams. Finally, individual teams may be added to fill out any remaining WYBL need; this may happen in a particular grade and/or at a specific competitive level that we need to complete the field. Lee will typically give you an answer prior to the September 30th deadline so you can begin to prep your program for WYBL entry.

The WYBl is limited by several variables, though facility access, referee sourcing, and administrative nighmares are top of mind. Each competitive division is probably optimized between 16-20 teams, though it can vary.

$930 per accepted team. Of that $930, $450 per team must be submitted to the WYBL. The remaining $480 is held internally to pay referees before each game ($30 per referee per game).

Each team must complete the official roster and get the necessary signatures. A medical waiver is also required and there is a October 25 deadline. In rare cases, we may approve a longer deadline, but in no instance may your program or individual team play any game without the submission of these documents.

The WYBL has a 16 game regular season followed by the Year End Championship tournament. When the final count of teams are locked down (September 30), Lee will separate each grade into competitive divisions (usually 5 for 4th-8th). By Friday, October 11th, you will receive a spreadsheet "rough" schedule that will show what weeks you are scheduled to play. Note:this will NOT show your game location, game time, nor opponent. However, this will lock in your league play dates

It is done quickly so teams can then schedule outside tournaments, family vacations, etc since they will know the game weeks.

Within 10 days of receipt of the "rough schedule", a complete 6,000 game schedule will be posted on our website. This will also be in the format of a spreadsheet. It will have all the game locations, game times, opponents, and court assignments.Shortly thereafter, Lee will upload the website schedule into the website and from that point on, you will be able to access everything through the SCHEDULE portion of the website.

You don't. The time for avoiding a conflict is before the schedule comes out. You have plenty of time to then schedule tournaments.

The WYBL recommends carrying a roster size that allows for these unforeseen events. However, you may always call a player "up" from a lower division or lower grade to fill out potential player shortfalls.

That's a hard NO. A good way to get your program or team banned from future WYBL participation.

It is not receommended, but there are times we will allow it (a temporary measure because of illness, injury, etc). A player may always play "up" a grade or competitive level. A player can NEVER play down a grade. In the rare instances of player shortages, starting "A" level players should not be utilized to even populate lower grade level teams.

We mirror the high school basketball season. Roughly half the teams will start the first week of November while the other half will start the following week. There will ne games scheduled for the Sunday after Thanksgiving, but no games Xmas and New years weekend

Our first games start at 8am and our final games tip off at 6pm on a typical Sunday. Teams will be scheduled for 2 games. It is our intention to schedule 85-90% of our games in a back-to-back fashion. The other 10-15% will be played in a play-sit-play format (ex: 3-court facilities by design have a wait built in). We also may contractually have to have break in between.

Yes, the younger grades tend to play morning games and the game times get progressively later as the kids age. We have learned that 7th & 8th graders are more like zombies in the morning and giving them 8am starting times is not ideal!

No, there isn't a fixed "home" for each team. The WYBL contracts with schools for gym access and hosting over 6,000 games requires 5-7 large facilities each Sunday of the season. In addition, we contract with a few private facilities like MOSH (Franklin), OAW (new Berlin) and Center Court (Waukesha) as needed to round out our court needs. Many variables goes into game starting time and game location. Where you are assigned often depends on who is hosting that day, whom the opponent is, and how far the commute is for all involved. Every effort is made to minimize disruptions and make it fair for everyone.

Yes, hosting facilities will have a concession stand. They will select the food & beverage on offer and carry in food & drinks are prohibited. The WYBl pays schools for gym usage and takes our relationship with each district very seriously. Follow all instructions at schools regarding parking, no bouncing of basketballs in the hallways, no wandering hallways, etc. We are guests of the schools and need to act accordingly!

Though gym costs have been raised as well as nearly all ancillary costs, it will remain unchanged at $3 per person (cash). Kids under 6 years of age will enter at no charge. There is not a senior rate offered at this time.

We serve as guests at each school. When they notify the WYBl of a potential change, we immediately will post an update on the home page of our website. In addition, it will be posted on our social media pages. Please note, it is highly RARE for any games to be cancelled. The geographical footprint of the WYBl is large as we go from the the southern WI border to Sheboygan,Fond du lac, and out to the Madison area. The weather in your specific area may be more or less intense. It is winter time. It is best to plan extra time to arrive safely at your game location.

All teams are expected to play in the Year-End Championship Tournament. It is "free" as it is part of the team entry fee and all referee costs will be covered by the WYBL. The tournament will be a one-day tournament with a two game guarantee (potential for 4-5 games). Teams will be "seeded" into a bracket based upon their regular season WYBL records. Win the first game and you advance to the Championship side of the bracket; lose the first game and you head to the Consolation side. From there, one loss and you are eliminated. Awards will go to 1st, 2nd, and Consolation champion. 7th & 8th grades (along with a few other divisions) play the first Sat/Sun in March while the other teams will then play the following weekend date(s).
